Do you have a passion for and deep understanding of the way in which food, drink, the arts, travel, fashion and technology impact the cities we live in? Do you love crafting compelling digital content that delivers a story that's worth spending time with? Can you write accurate, balanced and engaging news stories at breakneck speed, and also craft and edit features built on creative editorial concepts?

Our client is currently seeking a skilled, experienced editor to join its Sydney team as Editorial Director. If you answered in the affirmative to a sizeable chunk of the above, you may just be the person we're looking for.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Managing Director and working closely with the editorial and business teams, you'll be responsible for overseeing the company’s entire editorial agenda. You will come up with story and series ideas, commission editorial and photography work from staff and freelancers, drive the brand's strategy and produce beautiful, compelling digital content. Fastidious sub-editing will be a pillar of your day, as will making images, text, video and links all work together well.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and executing editorial strategy across Australia and New Zealand
  • Commissioning and producing interesting, engaging and topical digital content about food, drink, arts, culture, technology, travel, lifestyle and urban affairs
  • Developing creative and adventurous multimedia feature ideas that resonate with the audience
  • Tracking and evaluating website analytics
  • Managing 4 editors and a team of freelance writers across Australia and New Zealand
  • Sending out email newsletters & assisting with social media
  • Being the public face of the brand – will be going to loads of events
  • Working with the business / partnerships team to develop relevant and authentic ideas for native content

REQUIREMENTS

  • A university degree in media, arts or a related field
  • At least three years' experience as an editor in digital media
  • A strong engagement with the cultural scene of the city that is Sydney
  • A demonstrable ability to write smart, funny, popular articles, and to continually do so
  • Experience writing about some or all of these topic areas – food, drink, arts, technology, design, sustainability, current affairs, fashion, lifestyle, travel, film, music and pop culture
  • Solid subediting skills, video skills and ability to work with a style guide
  • Experience with social media management and strategy
  • Knowledge of SEO and basic HTML
  • Experience working with a content management system (preferably WordPress)
  • A good eye for images and skills with image production (preferably Photoshop)
  • Strong people management skills
